Emergencies, particularly hurricanes, can range from inconvenient to devastating. However, with proper preparation, you can minimize the impact on yourself, your family, and your home.
Plan Your Evacuation Route Early
When a hurricane approaches, evacuation routes often become congested, so it’s wise to plan ahead and consider leaving early if advised. Choose a safe route that avoids low-lying areas prone to flooding, and have a backup plan. If you are instructed to evacuate, do so immediately—safety is the priority.
Stay Away from High Water and Downed Power Lines
Never drive through moving or high-rising water, as it can be incredibly dangerous. Additionally, high winds can knock down power lines, which carry lethal voltage. Never attempt to move or touch these lines. After the storm, report any downed wires or power outages to FPL at (800) 225-5797.
Prepare Your Home and Family
Before the storm hits, make sure you have:
- A disaster supply kit with three to five days’ worth of non-perishable food and water.
- Flashlights, a portable radio, and plenty of batteries.
- Vital documents stored in waterproof containers (or digital copies on a memory card).
- Your home secured by pruning weak branches and bringing loose patio furniture indoors.
Shelters and Emergency Services
Escambia County will provide shelters for those who lose their homes or need refuge. However, once hurricane conditions hit, local police, fire, and sheriff departments won’t be able to respond until it’s safe to reopen roads. Plan accordingly and evacuate as soon as it’s recommended.
Don’t Forget Your Pets
Your pets are part of your family and need protection, too. Make a pet plan that includes food, water, and a safe place to shelter them during the storm.
